How to Manage Your Account

This guide covers how to update your profile, change your password, manage email notifications, export your data, and delete your account.

Before You Begin

You will need:

  • A Plucky Wire account

Instructions

Access Your Account Settings

  1. Log in to your Plucky Wire account.

  2. Click Settings in the navigation bar.

  3. In the left sidebar, click Profile. This is listed below any Groups or Outlets where you have admin permissions.

Edit Your Profile

  1. On the profile settings page, find the Profile section.

  2. Update your information:

    Full Name
Your first and last name as they appear on stories and in member lists. Each goes in its own input box.
    Job Title
Your position (e.g., "Senior Reporter at The Canterbury Crier"). Helps colleagues recognise you in member lists.
    Make my profile publicly visible
Toggle this on to display your full name and job title to other Plucky Wire users so they can find and message you. When off, your details are hidden from the public profile listings.
  3. Click Save & Refresh.

Note

Your email address is displayed on the profile page but cannot be edited directly. To update your email, contact support@pluckyworks.org.

Customize Group Colors

If you belong to multiple Groups, you can assign a custom color to each one. Colors appear in the navigation sidebar to help you quickly identify which Group you're working in.

  1. In the Personalization section, use the color picker next to each Group.

  2. Click Save & Refresh.

Tip

Light shades work best because the Group name text will still be easy to read against the background.

Change Your Password

  1. On the profile settings page, navigate to the Change Password section.

  2. Enter your new password in the New Password field.

  3. Enter the same password in the Confirm Password field.

  4. Click Change Password.

A confirmation message appears when the password has been updated. You will stay logged in.

Manage Email Preferences

Control which email notifications you receive from Plucky Wire.

  1. On the profile settings page, navigate to the Email Preferences section.

  2. You'll see a list of available email notifications, each with a toggle.

  3. Check or uncheck the boxes to subscribe or unsubscribe from each notification type.

Some notifications are marked Required and cannot be turned off.

Note

Changes to email preferences may take a few days to take full effect.

Export Your Data

Download a copy of all your personal data stored in Plucky Wire. This export complies with GDPR data portability requirements.

  1. On the profile settings page, navigate to the Export My Data section, then click Export My Data.

  2. On the export page, click Generate Data Export.

  3. The export is generated and cached. Once ready, you'll see a summary showing:

    • Total number of records
    • Counts for each data category (memberships, downloads, bookmarks, stories edited, and more)
  4. Click Download My Data (JSON) to save the file.

The exported data includes:

  • Profile and settings — Your account details
  • Memberships — All Groups and Outlets you belong to, with your roles
  • Story activity — Stories you've downloaded, bookmarked, or edited
  • Content created — Outlets you've created or verified, stories you've contributed to
  • Membership requests — Requests you've sent or received
  • RSS feeds — Feeds you've created

Warning

The export is temporarily cached for 1 hour, then automatically deleted from our servers. Download it promptly after generating.

Delete Your Account

Warning

Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. Before proceeding, consider exporting your data.

Before you can delete your account, you must first remove yourself from all Outlets and Groups. The deletion page shows you any remaining associations and instructions for removing them.

Step 1: Remove your associations

  1. On the profile settings page, navigate to the Delete Account section.

  2. If you're still associated with any Outlets or Groups, the page lists them along with your role in each.

  3. Remove yourself from each one:

    • If you're an admin of the Outlet or Group, go to that entity's settings and remove yourself from the member list.
    • If you're a regular member, ask an admin to remove you.
  4. Once all associations are removed, the deletion button becomes available.

Step 2: Confirm deletion

  1. Click Delete My Account.

  2. In the confirmation dialog:

    • Enter your password.
    • Check the box confirming you understand the action is permanent.
  3. Click Delete My Account to confirm.

Your account is deleted immediately. You will be logged out and redirected to the home page.

What happens when you delete your account:

  • Your access to Plucky Wire is permanently removed
  • Your profile information is deleted
  • Records of stories you edited or downloaded are anonymized
  • Your sessions are terminated across all devices

Troubleshooting

  • I can't edit my email address: Email changes must be handled by support. Contact support@pluckyworks.org with your current and desired email addresses.

  • My password change isn't working: Make sure both password fields match exactly. If you've forgotten your current password, use the password reset link on the login page instead.

  • My data export is taking too long: The export is generated when you click the button and should be ready within a few seconds. If it fails, try again or contact support@pluckyworks.org.

  • I can't delete my account: You must leave all Groups and Outlets first. The deletion page lists any remaining associations that need to be removed.

  • I deleted my account by mistake: Account deletion is permanent. Contact support@pluckyworks.org as soon as possible, but recovery may not be possible.

  • Still stuck? Email support@pluckyworks.org and we'll help you sort it out.
