How to import calendar feeds¶
Add an ICS subscription to import events into your newsroom outlet. You can start before creating any calendars. You need calendar management permission. Enabling automatic publication also requires event moderation permission.
Add a feed¶
- In Plucky Newsroom, open Events → Imports. Outlets you can manage appear in separate sections; choose the appropriate outlet section.
- Open Add import feed.
- Enter a name, the public ICS or webcal subscription address, and a fallback time zone such as
America/New_York. The form starts with the application time zone. The fallback applies when a source event does not specify a time zone. - Leave Automatically publish future imports unchecked to review new events before publication. Select it only when you want this source's future imports to publish automatically. Events with an unverified physical venue still require manual review.
- Select Add feed. The check runs in the background; saving does not wait for the source to download.
Repeat these steps for additional feeds. Each feed belongs to the outlet, with its own review policy. There is no calendar choice. Approved events appear in every calendar whose filters match them. Different feeds keep independent source events and review decisions, even when they supply the same event UID.
An outlet can subscribe to each normalized address only once, including retired feeds. A duplicate shows This feed is already configured for this outlet. Open the existing source to edit or reactivate it. The same address can be used independently by another outlet.
Review imported events¶
- Open a feed and select Review imported events. This filters the Review events queue to that feed, within your moderation coverage.
- Open an event and select Edit details. The title, date and time, venue, details, and description become editable where they are shown.
- Correct the title, start, end, time zone, type, ticket cost, or description as needed. Times are interpreted in the selected time zone. An all-day event's end is the first day after the event.
- Check the venue name, street address, city, state, and ZIP. Recognizable US addresses from the feed are already split into these fields.
- Select Validate address, then choose the matching Google Maps result from the list that opens under the street address (or under the venue name when there is no street address). The label beside the button changes from Not validated to Venue verified. You can also search by typing in the venue name or street address.
- Select Save details, then approve or reject the event.
A physical venue must show Venue verified before you can save the event or approve it. Changing any venue field after validating clears the check, so validate again. Events without a location, or with only an online meeting address, don't need validation. Type is required before you can save.
If Google Maps venue search is unavailable, imports still arrive, but you can't save venue corrections or approve the event until search works again.
Select Show original submission to compare with the feed's original title, location, and description. Later feed checks preserve your corrected venue and address together.
For a proposed cancellation, Approve cancellation cancels the previously published event. Keep published event rejects the cancellation and retains the published event.
Change a feed or request a check¶
Expand the feed to see its status, last check, last successful check, warning count, and import counts. Select Check now to schedule another background check.
Edit the name, subscription address, or fallback time zone and select Save feed. The saved publication policy is always shown. If you also have moderation permission, the automatic publication checkbox lets you change it; otherwise ordinary edits preserve the saved policy. Change it to choose whether future imports require review. Changing this policy does not approve an existing review backlog or undo previous decisions.
Replacing the subscription address retires the old source while retaining its pending and published events. An earlier address remains reserved by its retired source. Use Reactivate on that source to resume it; entering its address again does not restore or replace it. To publish the replacement automatically, check If replacing the address, automatically publish from the new source. Leaving this separate checkbox unchecked requires review for the replacement even when the previous feed used automatic publication.
Stop importing¶
Select Delete feed to stop future imports. Pending and published events and editorial decisions remain. Approved events remain eligible for every matching calendar. The retired feed stays visible; edit its settings or choose Reactivate to resume checks. Editing alone does not reactivate it. Reactivating an automatic source also requires moderation permission.
Deleting a calendar leaves all feeds and imports unchanged.
If a check fails, verify the source address and try Check now. A warning count means some unsupported or invalid entries may have been skipped; existing published events remain available.
