How to Join an Outlet¶
This guide covers how to join or create an Outlet after you've created your Plucky Wire account.
Before You Begin¶
You will need:
- A Plucky Wire account (see Sign up with email or Sign up with MuckRock)
- A verified email address
- The name of the outlet you want to join, or information about the outlet you want to register
Instructions¶

Log in to your Plucky Wire account.

On the Dashboard page, you'll see a prompt to join an outlet. Click Join an Outlet.
You'll be taken to a page where you can search for or register your outlet.

In the search box, type the name of your outlet and click SEARCH.
What happens next depends on whether your outlet is already registered on Plucky Wire.
If Your Outlet Appears in Search Results¶

Find your outlet in the search results.

Click Request to Join.
Info
If your email domain matches the outlet's website domain, you'll be added automatically. Otherwise, an administrator will need to approve your request.
Plucky Wire staff can assist with this process, so don't be afraid to ask for help.
If Your Outlet Doesn't Appear in Search Results¶
If no results are found, or if you can't find your outlet, you can register it.

After searching, you'll see a "Register Your Outlet" form. (If results were found, click Register [your search query] to expand the form.)

Fill in the registration form:
- Outlet Name - Pre-filled from your search query (read-only)
- Website URL - Your outlet's website (required)
- Primary Email - A contact email for your outlet (required)
- Location - City or region (optional)
- Description - A brief description of your outlet (optional)

Click Submit for Review.
Your outlet will be reviewed by Plucky Wire staff to verify it's a working newsroom. You'll receive an email once verification is complete.

The verification process typically takes 1-2 business days. If we're not confident that your outlet produces original reporting, we'll email you to learn more about your newsroom before making a decision.

- Join a Group to start sharing stories with other outlets
- Invite colleagues to join your outlet
Troubleshooting¶

I can't find my outlet: Try searching for variations of the name. If you still can't find it, your outlet may not be registered yet. Use the registration form to add it.

My request to join an outlet is still pending: Outlet administrators receive an email when someone requests to join. If your request has been pending for more than a day, try reaching out to a colleague at your outlet who you know is already on Plucky Wire. If you can't find anybody who's already on Plucky Wire, reach out to Plucky Wire staff. We'll be happy to help.

My outlet is pending verification: New outlets are reviewed by Plucky Wire staff before they can be used. This typically takes 1-2 business days. All we check for is to make sure you produce original reporting. You'll receive an email when verification is complete.

I joined the wrong outlet: Go to Settings, find the outlet under "Your Outlets," then go to the Users tab. Find your name and click Remove. If you don't see the Outlet in your Settings menu, it means your role in the group is a Member and you cannot access the settings menu. To remove yourself from the outlet, please get someone from the outlet to remove you or contact Plucky Wire staff.
