How to Download a Story¶
This guide covers how to download a story for republishing, including copying story text, downloading attachments, and using embedded media.
Before You Begin¶
You will need:
- A story you want to reprint (see How to Find Stories)
- Remaining downloads in your monthly allowance (unless your group is exempt from limits)
Tip
Want to automate this process? Your Outlet has a private RSS feed containing all stories you've downloaded. Use it to automatically import stories into your CMS. See Automate with RSS below.
Instructions¶
Start the Download¶
- On the story page, click the Reprint this story button.
Info
Story pages have URLs that start with wire.pluckyworks.org/stories/view/...
-
If you belong to multiple Outlets, select which Outlet is reprinting this story from the dropdown, then click Continue.
You'll be taken to the download page.
Note
The download is recorded when you click "Reprint this story." This counts toward your download limit and appears in the story's activity statistics.
Outlets have download limits based on their subscription level. You can see how many downloads you have left in this billing cycle in the navbar at the top of the screen. If you've reached your limit, before you can download again you'll need to wait until your next billing cycle.
Info
Some Groups, including those under select institutional contracts, have unlimited downloads. If you're under an institutional contracts and you're still having issues with downloads, please email Johnny.

Add it to your published story's HTML to help the original Outlet track republication reach.
Next Steps¶
After downloading a story:
- Return to Search to find more stories
- View your Outlet's download history in the Analytics section
Troubleshooting¶
-
"Download limit reached" error: Your Outlet has used all its monthly downloads. Wait for your next billing cycle, upgrade your subscription, or ask your group administrator about exemptions.
-
"This story is embargoed" error: The story isn't available for download yet. Check the story page for the embargo date and try again after it passes.
-
An attachment won't download: Check your browser's download settings and pop-up blocker. Try right-clicking the download button and selecting "Save link as."
-
Embedded media isn't displaying on my site: Make sure your website allows iframes from the media provider (YouTube, DataWrapper, etc.). Some content management systems block external embeds by default.
-
I accidentally downloaded the wrong story: The download has already been recorded. If this happens frequently, preview stories carefully before clicking "Reprint this story."
Automate with RSS¶
If you want to automatically pull stories from Plucky Wire into your content management system, you can do so using RSS.
Every time you download a story from Plucky Wire, that story is added to a private RSS feed that we create for your Outlet. Your CMS can monitor this feed and automatically import new stories when they appear.
Finding Your RSS Feed URL¶
-
Go to Settings and select your Outlet.
-
In the General tab, scroll to the RSS Feed Integration section.
-
Click Copy to copy your RSS feed URL.
Warning
Keep your RSS feed URL private. Anyone with this URL can access the full text of stories you've downloaded.
What's Included in the Feed¶
The RSS feed contains your 50 most recently downloaded stories, with the newest downloads appearing first. Each story includes:
- Headline and subheadline
- Full story text with HTML formatting
- Author name and publication date
- Link to the original story
- Images, audio, and video files (as media enclosures)
- Embedded content like Datawrapper charts or YouTube videos
Compatible Platforms¶
The feed uses RSS 2.0 format with content:encoded for the full story text. It works with all the major CMS platforms, including:
- WordPress / Newspack
- Ghost
- BLOX CMS
- Drupal
